The Star In News Shock-Print Rolls Out of City!

No more visits to see the press rolling! I am sure there will be very many people who will feel gutted at the loss of this activity.

The country’s largest selling evening newspaper is to cease printing at its current city centre location after 122 years.

The Express and Star has announced it is to move its printing operation from Wolverhampton, where it has been based since 1889, to Telford.

It is understood that the move, which will take place next month, will result in 11 job losses in the press room along with three electrician positions.

Parent company the Midland News Association has stressed that the remainder of the Express and Star’s operations, including the editorial and advertising departments, will remain in the city.

In a statement, the company said the E&S will move to newly refurbished, full-colour printing presses at Ketley in Telford where sister title the Shropshire Star is printed.

The statement acknowledged that the move would lead to “a number of redundancies” but did not put a figure on this.

MNA managing director Alan Harris said: “This has been a very difficult decision to make but the continued challenging economic climate has made it crucial for us to take measures to secure the long term success of the business.”

He added that the move to printing at Telford would mean greatly improved efficiency within the company, as well as enhanced colour availability within the Express and Star.
