Metal Thieves Steal War Memorial in Wednesfield

The Express and Star carries this report. “Vandals have stolen two metal plates from a war memorial in Wolverhampton bearing the names of dozens of soldiers who died during the First and Second World Wars.
The plates have been removed from the Wednesfield Village Memorial, in Church Street, sparking outrage from veterans’ associations.

The attack comes seven months after members of the city’s Burma Star Association were left in tears after a 14-year old vandal from Dudley sprayed obscene pink graffiti on the cenotaph, in the grounds of St Peter’s Church”

Phil Bateman said today “This is a vile crime. There is no other way to describe it. There was a real campaign in 2004 to have this particular war memorial uplifted and enhanced recognising the great sacrifice Wednesfield families made to make the World of today.

As the Councillor in 2004 that worked with the Royal British Legion, the Wednesfield Forum and the City Council to refurbish and enhance the war memorial. I cannot find the right words to describe the anger I feel at the desecration that has taken place on this site.

What I would say is that we cannot allow this criminal bunch to win. The names must be recast and placed back on the plinth. We must insist that this takes place. Any person who knows who committed this outrage should inform the police”
