Beat Governments British Waterways Land Grab!

The threat by the Treasury to sell off the land bank and assets owned by British Waterways Board is a threat to us all. Even a Labour Party loyalist like me feels very much aggrieved that there is consideration being given to what would be a policy death knell for British Waterways."
Many would argue that they are already underfunded, yet they have delivered a fabulous legacy to the Country. Not just the rural waterways that gets so much attention. But the inner city development and urban area changes that have taken place.

Just look how canals have been transformed around Wolverhampton. They are very much a community asset. Rather than impoverish BW the Government should be looking to enhance the role that waterways can provide. By that I mean not just be the commercial and industrial activities it is involved in. But by expanding the community role through environmental and nature conservancy, which in turn can add much to our environments. Leading to visitors and tourism which is a sector that can deliver so much to our local communities that share waterways.

My advice to all our local MP's would be to vigorously challenge the Treasury and the Government on this policy. Fight against the sale of the land assets. Because the Country will be a poorer place if the 'fire sale' takes place.

I know that I shall be doing all that I can to ensure that the changes do not go through as are being reported this morning."
