ASBO's The Way Forward?

Anti Social Behaviour Orders are a key part now in the way that Local Authorities and the Police face up to the challenge of reducing the bug bear of nuisance.

Councillor Phil Bateman has recently been asking the City Authority about the way in which these orders are being used and the success rate of them.

Councillor Bateman said today “I am keen to see the City Council and the Police reducing anti social behaviour. I admit to having some concerns about the way in which orders when awarded by the Court are monitored and acted upon.

Whilst not wishing to be too critical of the process I must admit to being quizzical about the lack of information that the Anti Social Behaviour Unit has about the impact these penalties have had in the community.

I will be seeking a meeting with police and officials in the New Year to follow through my line of enquiry. I am informed that some 40% of Anti Social Behaviour Orders are being breached. This then becomes a criminal offence and is then dealt with by the police.

A lot more understanding is required on my part about this policy and I will report on the outcome on this site early in 2005.”
