City Classics

Councillor Phil Bateman Deputy Mayor said "Well last night we attended the Civic Hall along with Councillor Alan Hart , The Mayor of Wolverhampton, and the Mayoress Beryl Hart at their kind invitation.

It was the first time that Mary and I had been to a classical concert at the Civic Hall, though we have both been to Pop Concerts. It was a very good evening with lots of the concert goers speaking with us at the interlude and at the end of the evening. With about 650- 700 people in attendance the Hall sadly was not quite full. The temperature was a touch warm but the Orchestra was superb, it was the 'BBC Philharmonic' they played Bruch and Brahms. The conductor was Sir Edward Downes and Anthony Marwood Soloist.

Now I am no expert but it was a nice change and the music was so soothing especially as I had not been well during the day at work and had to come home early. I really had not ought to have gone to the concert but I felt that I would have let a lot of people down.

Still no after effects and it was a very illuminating night all-round. The City is marketing these concerts under the strapline City Classics 2004/5 they are well worth a visit. The next one is the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on the 8th December and they visit again on the 12th January 2005.

If you are interested and I do hope readers in Wednesfield will be, the Box Office number is 01902 552 121 .

It is concerts like this one that gives soul to a City. We really do need to support such a fine facility and such a wide variety of music that is attracted into Wolverhampton. I am sure the audience listening on the radio would have picked up not only the fine orchestral sounds. But also the applause that came from the audience. The really good news is that the BBC were broadcasting this very evocative orchestral performance. So this will once again help to market our fine City across the air waves."
