BT Phone Box for the Chop!

The campaign to remove a British Telecom payphone that was causing grief to residents in Ecclestone Road Ashmore Park has been won with the decision by BT to remove the kiosk.

Councillor Dave Jones with Doomed Telephone Kiosk

Councillor Phil Bateman said " The decision to remove the kiosk has taken place against a background of support given to local residents by Ken Purchase MP and Wednesfield North Labour Councillors.

In Wolverhampton North East there are still 57 BT Payphones supplying a facility that is required still by many people.

BT has placed a notice in the Ecclestone Road box informing users that it is for the chop, there is a 42 day consultation period whereby people who would like to oppose the BT decision can make their views known.

But in this case both Councillor Dave Jones and myself agree with the decision to withdraw the facility. I know that some local residents will be pleased as they initially requested our support for this course of action.

Residents have been plagued by youths who have used the telephone kiosk in a very anti social way, causing noise nuisance and anxiety to those persons who have had the misfortune of living close to what should have been a valued community facility.

We are as a Labour Party sad to see these type of facilities misused but in this case we shall support BT's decision."

We thank Ken Purchase MP for supporting and informing us of this decision.
