Local Safety Scheme for Broad Lane North

Residents in Broad Lane North will have received a letter from the City Council about a local safety scheme. Councillor Phil Bateman said “I know that there are a number of you that will be wondering what all this is about.

There has been for sometime now a concern amongst residents that the speeds that are being achieved by some motorists are far too great for safety. Not so long ago a car left the road crashing through the fence near the bridge over the canal.

I have previously written to the City Council and the Police about these concerns.
We have had the police make some speed checks in the interim, but clearly these have not been often enough to check the racing spirit of some!

This consultation that is being embarked upon is the City Councils way of engaging you the resident…and me I live in the Lane also! In determining the sort of scheme the majority would like to see.

Well I for one would like to suggest that we do not want to see speed bumps. I have already argued for speed cameras as I believe that they would be less intrusive on the street scene and would act as a real deterrent to speedsters both day and night. They would also be friendlier than bumps to the emergency services.

But those are my views, they are not new as I made this type of case on my website quite a while ago, and I know one or two of you agree with this course of action because you have told me so!. Please contact me if you have a comment to make about the proposals, or if you just want to discuss what other schemes may be appropriate. ”
