Defeat On Police Station Opening Hours!

Wednesfield Police have today written to me formally explaining about the changes taking place at Wednesfield Police Station. Its a defeat for those in the community that wanted 24 hour opening for the public.

Ist April will see Wednesfield Police Station close to the public at the front desk between the hours of 18.00 x 10.00 hrs. This is a disappointment for our community.

In her letter to me, Superintendent Jan Thomas-West has emphasised that Officers will continue to work within communities, patrol, work with local people and partners to identify and solve issues of concern.

I for my part still strongly believe that this policy will be a costly one to the police. Because over time it will mean that the Wednesfield Community if they have to report in person to a police station in the evening, will have to make a long journey into the city, and join queues at night at the Central Police Station in Bilston Road to deal with their business.

Not nice and certainly not confidence building! I know that Wednesfield Labour Party will be calling for a meeting with the Police to discuss the Police Authorities plans for policing in Wednesfield going forward.
If the Police are intending to continue to use Wednesfield Police Station as they have indicated.

I know that Wednesfield North Labour Party and our community will want to know more about the services they will be providing. What intentions there are to have a 'proper' all purpose police station. What kind of enhanced number of police officers working from the station there will be, and what role they will they be playing within the police service and in our community.
Currently the 'rumour' is that most of the Wednesfield station is now housing solicitors, and other support services. I want to thank Superintendent Jan Thomas-West for her letter. It is helpful and I think that we all recognise that the Police are under intense financial and other pressures from the Conservative/Liberal Democrat Government.
