Breaking Speed Limits

Wednesfield North Labour Party campaign for a safer Broad Lane North has been quite instrumental in focussing attention on speeding vehicles in this Lane.
Wednesfield North Labour Party have been concerned about the speed of traffic operating in Broad Lane North for sometime now. Following these concerns dialogue has taken place with the City Council and I can report the following latest information we have.

Wolverhampton City Council undertook a survey following pressure from Wednesfield North Labour Party

The survey data (undertaken 03/11/08 to 09/11/08 24hrs/day) shows 18,600 vehicles travelling northbound and 24,518 travelling southbound in Broad Lane North.

The surveys split the speeds of vehicles into different bands, they start at 5mph and go up in increments of 5 to 60mph. The results show that in the band 60mph (vehicles travelling between 55mph and 60mph) there were 59 vehicles.

There is also an 'unclassified' section of the data which can include vehicles travelling too slow over the pneumatic survey tubes to register, or vehicles travelling greater than 60mph. There were 143 vehicles in this category!

Phil Bateman Wednesfield North Labour Party Secretary said " Whilst there is a chance that these 143 vehicles may have travelled slower than 5mph, I think that anyone living in the Lane will recognise that the probability is that these vehicles were travelling at far higher speeds than the 60mph.

Residents will be the judge of that summation, but the fact is that this Lane is being used by many to travel far in excess of speeds that are safe to this neighbourhood."

Wednesfield North Labour Party welcome the fact that the survey has been undertaken and we look to the police to carry out speed enforcement at some time in the future.

We also recognise that the City Council are also going to programme a 'speed warning' sign to be operational on Broad Lane North on a bi-monthly basis starting from January 2009.

The campaign that the Labour Party has been running over the best part of a year drawing attention to local concerns about vehicles speeding, has we think been very successful.
