The first Neighbourhood Watch scheme in this country was formed in 1981. Since then, over 170,000 street schemes, with a membership of over five million people, have come into being.

In 1995, Neighbourhood Watch finally came of age and was formed into a self-administering national association.

The basic aims of Neighbourhood Watch are:

To encourage neighbourliness and closer communities
Encourage residents to look after each others homes when they are out or away, even to the extent of taking in milk, pushing mail and papers through letterboxes, opening and drawing curtains
To encourage residents to report suspicious incidents to the police
To persuade the public to take security precautions and mark property.

Does it work?

Well, insurers give a discount on household contents premiums to acknowledge the fact that people in Neighbourhood Watch are a lower 'risk’. Research carried out by a leading insurance company recently suggested that residents in Neighbourhood Watch schemes are six times less likely to be burgled than non-members.
