Broad Lane Anti Speed Campaign

The results of the consultation that has taken place in Broad Lane North & South have now been published regarding the speed and casualty reduction measures to be implemented.
800 questionnaires were delivered and 250 replies back were received.

In Favour of the City Council proposals were 194 or 77.6%
Against was 49 or 19.6%
Of the 49 comments against the scheme only 17 were against the 'speed tables' proposed or the zebra crossing.

The remaining 32 were doubtful that the measures on the majority of Broad Lane North and South would be sufficient to reduce vehicle speeds adequately, and they requested that a variety of other measures be introduced including these of speed cameras.

Councillor Phil Bateman commenting on the scheme said
" The scheme now is imminent and hopefully when it has been constructed it will be very successful. I still remain convinced that the scheme would have more chance of success if there was a 'speed camera' that was also part of the solution.

In Broad Lane North there is much anecdotal evidence of the speed of motorists as they either approach the canal bridge or come over the bridge travelling at great speed towards the Lichfield Road. Many of the local residents will have a tale that they can tell having witnessed some of the incredible speed that some achieve.

Councillor Dave Jones and I have had quite a long chat about the further tactics that can be introduced which will help to kill speed. Councillor Jones said " We are both going continue to argue for such a facility. In the meantime we are formulating correspondence that will ask the police to enforce other anti speed measures like mobile radar and speed traps that they can operate under the road traffic act on Broad Lane North from time to time."
